How to Create an Assignment Rubric

The purpose of this document is to provide you with instructions on how to create a rubric for a Moodle assignment.

Negative points can be entered and used to assign penalties or deductions. If negative points are entered, ensure the Calculate grade based on the rubric having a minimum score of 0 option is enabled to avoid miscalculation of grades.

Creating an Assignment Rubric

  1. From the course homepage, select the assignment you wish to create a rubric for.
  2. Select the gear icon.
  3. Click Advanced grading in the drop-down menu.
  4. Select Rubric in the drop-down menu.
  5. Click Define new grading form from scratch.
  6. At the top, give your rubric a name.
  7. Optionally, write a description for your rubric in the Description text box. You may want to do this if you plan to create several rubrics.
  8. In the Rubric section, begin to fill in the rubric. Remember that you cannot use point ranges; only exact points can be entered. Here is an example of a completed rubric:

  9. Under Rubric Options, in the drop-down menu, select whether you want your rubric to be displayed Ascending By Number of Points or Descending By Number of Points.
  10. IMPORTANT: Click Save rubric and make it ready. (If you choose Save as draft, the rubric will not be ready to be used for grading.)
